What you will need to grow potatoes in Containers:

  • Container(s)polypots will take 1 x seed potato, planter bags will take up to 6 x seed potatoes.
  • Potato fertilizer – e.g. Vitax organic potato fertilizer.
  • General purpose compost – the sort that can be purchased in any good garden center.
  • Seed potatoes – with over 90 varieties of seed potatoes to choose from, the choice is yours!

How to grow potatoes in containers

Put around 4 inches of compost into the bottom of your container, place the seed potatoes into the compost about 4 inches away from the edge and equally spaced out in the container.

Now your potatoes are in the containers, scatter your fertilizer all around the potatoes, and then cover them up with up to a maximum of 6 inches of more compost.

Compost is normally moist enough as it comes, so you won’t need to water your potatoes just yet, so you can now leave them for about a week.

After a week, you’ll probably start to see that things are already starting to grow.  This is when you can start to add water.

Be careful not to over-water your potatoes. The compost should always be moist but never absolutely soaked.
