Growing Potatoes in Bags
Growing potatoes in bags is the way of the future for many keen gardeners who have no access to a garden to grow them in.
Potatoes can now be grown 365 days of the year by simply using the potato planter bags method, allowing you to very quickly and easily protect your potato crops from the cold and frost by moving them into a patio/conservatory or any heated area.
Simply lift up the planter bags and move them – no mess, no fuss.
Growing potatoes is so easy, there’s really no excuse for buying potatoes from the supermarkets when you can enjoy the fresh taste of your own home grown crops all year round. Anyone can grow their own potatoes at home.
What you’ll need to grow potatoes in bags:
- Potato planter bag(s) – 40 litre Potato planter bags will take up to 6 x seed potatoes each.
- 135g of potato fertilizer (per bag) – e.g. Vitax organic potato fertilizer.
- 40 litres of general purpose compost (per bag) – the sort that can be purchased in any good garden center.
- Seed potatoes – with over 90 varieties of seed potatoes to choose from, the choice is yours!
How to grow potatoes in bags
Put around 4 inches of compost into the bottom of your planter bags, place the seed potatoes (up to 6 potatoes per bag) into the compost about 4 inches away from the edge and equally spaced out in the bag.
Now your potatoes are in the bags, scatter your fertilizer all around the potatoes, and then cover them up with up to a maximum of 6 inches of more compost.
Compost is normally moist enough as it comes, so you won’t need to water your potatoes just yet, so you can now leave them for about a week.
After a week, you’ll probably start to see that things are already starting to grow. This is when you can start to add water.
Be careful not to over-water your potatoes. The compost should always be moist but never absolutely soaked.
